Lakeland Dairies Co-operative Society Limited (The Group) is the second largest dairy processor on the island of Ireland. The business is complex and ambitious with a milk supply pool of almost 2 billion litres of milk, drawn from over 3,200 family farms across 16 counties, and annual revenues in excess of €1 billion. With the most modern dairy manufacturing facilities in 8 locations on a cross border basis, the Group supplies to a broad customer base including some of the world’s foremost ‘blue chip’ companies across the dairy food ingredients, foodservice and consumer food channels on a domestic Ireland, UK, European and global basis. Internationally we export some 240 different products to over 80 countries worldwide. The Group’s Agribusiness Division (Lakeland Agri) operates a state of the art Animal Feed Manufacturing Facility and is a leading and innovative provider of the highest quality feeds and agricultural inputs to dairy, beef and sheep farmers across the north and south of Ireland. Irish milk production is among the most sustainable production systems globally and we must continue to hold that position and continue to improve our performance at all levels of our production, from farm to factory to consumer. Lakeland Dairies works closely with all relevant stakeholder groups across our catchment area including Teagasc, CAFRE, DII and others to ensure our milk suppliers have the most up to date information and advice in supporting and developing the sustainability of their on-farm businesses. Lakeland manufacturing sites operate Environmental Management Systems to ISO 14001:2015 Certification. These systems and practices are used to achieve continual improvement in waste water management, water usage, emissions to atmosphere, energy reduction and in the reduction, re-use and recycling of waste. All our plants adhere to the highest regulatory standards and requirements including those governing Emissions and Integrated Pollution Control. Lakeland Dairies is a member of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme which we use to manage our carbon responsibilities. Carbon footprint is monitored, evaluated and recorded throughout the organisation. We are a highly energy efficient organisation including the use of renewable energies and Combined Heat and Power Plants. Opportunity: To build further on our performance and achievements to date and to further support and enable our existing teams across the Group we seek to recruit a Group Sustainability Manager. Role Summary. Reporting to the Group Chief Executive and working in collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team’s Group Sustainability Committee - the Group Sustainability Manager (GSM) will: Develop and implement environmental, societal, and sustainability strategies across all Group operations and activities which uphold, and work towards finding, new innovative and economically reductive ways of enabling Lakeland to operate and stay green. Be responsible for overseeing sustainability programme alignment with corporate business strategy and ensuring performance compliance with all appropriate regulations, including but not limited to EPA, OSHA, SQF and our corporate guidelines. Acting primarily through our Member Relations and Agri teams, provide expert guidance and support to assist our farmers in delivering on sustainable production systems. The Person: The successful candidate will be passionate about our environment and its sustainability, ideally with a knowledge of modern farming practices. You will possess the ability to inspire others to be innovative in developing solutions that deliver and maintain environmental sustainability goals. You will have a comprehensive understanding of environmental and sustainability related legislation and regulations in Ireland, the EU and the UK. You will also have a strategic and tactical mindset while also being strong on detail and data analytics, with excellent communication, presentation and written skills. Qualifications, Skills & Experience Required: Third Level (preferably Master’s) Degree required in a related field. Experienced professional with demonstrable knowledge of legislative requirements, energy management systems (ISO 50001) and sustainability, biodiversity and waste management within a manufacturing discipline. Experience in the Agri Food sector is desirable. Membership/Chartership of a recognised Environmental Professional body such as IEMA, CIWM, CIWEM, or a recognised equivalent.
